James Cotton - Cotton Mouth Man

Neil Young, Foo Fighters, Black Keys, James Cotton & Pharoah Sanders

It was a ridiculous weekend as I doubled dipped at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Friday and saw arguably the greatest living harmonica player AND the greatest living sax player in the same evening – James Cotton in the spectacular Allen Room and Pharoah Sanders at Dizzys.

As I’m a musical glutton, I reported to Central Park’s Great Lawn the following day with 60,000 or so pals for the Global Festival which featured a surfeit of talent namely Neil Young, The Foo Fighters, and The Black Keys as well as K’naan and Band of Horses – neither squandered the opportunity to prove themselves worthy of being on the bill. The Keys (performing as a four piece) and Foos roared through 50 minute sets that would have sent us all home quite satisfied but then Neil Young and Crazy Horse added 70 minutes more of feedback drenched ragged glory. A ferocious Fuckin’ Up and Rockin’ in the Free World with Auerbach and Grohl joining Neil and Frank Sampedro on guitars provided appropriate punctuation on a glorious evening.
