Verve/Remixed CD Review

Verve//Remixed is like taking an old girlfriend to a trendy south end bistro. You know what’s at the core but presentation and ambience make a brand new experience. This compilation of jazz standards remixed by a gaggle of djs and producers yields mostly positive results and a few inspired moments. Joe Claussell earns points for his subtle amping of Nina Simone’s Feelin’ Good but Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit wasn’t the best choice for Tricky tweaking. Thievery Corporation giving the trip-hop treatment to Astrud Gilberto is the kind of thing that can lead to sex and Dorfmeister Con Madrid De Los Austrias Muga Reserv marriage of Santana’s No One to Depend On to Willie Bobo’s Spanish Grease maybe wasn’t made in heaven but its worth a fling. So is the CD. -Eric Holland
