Australian rockers DMA’s, who recently released their self-titled EP in the States, are regulafellas. The guys in this exciting rock band still have day jobs back in Sydney and are tormented tenants too; they told me how they plan to trash their house above a hairdresser’s salon before they move out. The band, comprised of singer Tommy O’Dell and guitarists Johnny Took (who played acoustic in this session) and Matt Mason (who played electric), share songwriting duties equally. For our WFUV Live session, they played as a six-piece; joined by old friends on a second electric and a rhythm section which is how they’ve been touring as well.
Despite the lack of rockstar BS or trappings of hype, an unmistakable buzz surrounds them. Their music was crafty enough to get them signed to a hip label (I OH YOU in Australia and Mom + Pop here in the states so actually two hip labels) on the strength of their demos. It was reported that all three major labels expressed interest and they turned down a seven figure deal from one of them! The EP – six songs recorded over three years – justifies that kind of confidence and is a sensation on iTunes. Catch a hang with DMA’s during this episode of WFUV Live.
And by the way, if you love animation THIS VIDEO for their tune Your Low is a must-view.
