Sylvan Esso are a wildly crafty and inventive musical duo made up of the golden-throated Amelia Meath and mad sonic scientist Nick Sanborn. They’ve created music that’s long on hooks and not short on style since they got together seven years ago. Along with unleashing their new album — their third — Free Love, they recorded a handful of songs especially for WFUV Live, including a couple of past favorites. Thievery Corporation kissed off September of ’17 with a spirited performance at the Ford Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk Saturday night as part of the Temple Of I & I tour.  As is the Corporation‘s standard operating procedure, the crew born in DC in the mid 90s had a handful of talented vocalists adding their individual charms to the sonic foundation laid down by founding DJs Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, bassist Ashish (Hash) Vyas, guitarist/sitarist Rob Myers, percussionist Frank Orrall, and drummer Jeff Franca.. Among them was the Paris raised Austin based chanteuse Loulou Ghelichkhani who Garza noted has been with them from the beginning of their career.  It was a home borough gig of sorts for the Buenos Aires native Natalia Clavier who these days splits her time between Barcelona and Brooklyn.  The Jamaican vocalist Racquel Jones, who made a refreshing splash on the Temple Of I & I, lit up the stage while making her debut with the touring band this year.  The irrepressible and dreadlocked Bostonian Mr. Lif, and – dressed in white representing St. Thomas, Puma Ptah the artist formerly known as Chris Ras Puma Smith added their diverse talents on the mic as well.

The Thievery show was one of the last of the season at the open air Ford Amphitheater which opened just last June. Their jazz brunch series will continue through the next few Sundays ending on the 22nd.

I had a chance to sit down with Rob Garza earlier this year at Stanleyâ€s Pharmacy at 31 Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side.  The video at the top of the page as well as the video below represent best bits of that conversation.  He spoke about the latest album The Temple Of I And I which had just come out and the sessions for it in Jamaica.

Thievery Corporation are back with a new album, The Temple Of I & I, that was recorded in Jamaica and is the most dramatic manifestation of  their career-long fascination with the music of that island.  When Rob Garza and Eric Hilton first got together in DC in the mid 90s to form their consistently adventurous and rewarding production duo, one of their first and most powerful discoveries was their shared love of artists like King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry.

As Garza made clear in the interview, they had a brilliant time hanging out in Jamaica and recording at Geejam Studios.  Enjoy the bonus video below in which he relates a brush with Toots Hibbert.  One insight that Garza shared was that he and Hilton often compose tracks that exist as instrumentals before kicking around who they might like to invite to sing on them.  Artists they’ve worked with in the past like Zee, Shana Halligan, and Lou Lou were all invited back as was old friend Notch.  The latter reunited with Garza and Hilton for the first time since appearing on 2002’s The Richest Man In Babylon (traditionally my favorite Thievery record) and 2004’s The Cosmic Game and knows something about bridging American and Jamaican cultures as evidenced in his 90s group Born Jamericans.  Boston MC Mr. Lif contributed to the album as well and is part of the touring band as he has been over the past few years.  New friend Racquel Jones also represents Jamaica beautifully on a pair of tunes.

I asked if the I & I of the title, which Garza described as Jamaican patois for ‘we’ had any connection to the 1986 Bad Brains album I Against I.  There is not a specific connection but he did acknowledge that Bad Brains, as fellow DCers, are held in high esteem and have been a great influence on he and Hilton.

Elliot Moss Unveils New Music At The Penthouse At The Standard – January 30, 2017

Elliot Moss made it clear he is a young artist worth keeping an ear on with an engaging performance on Monday at The Penthouse at the Standard. A lot of people, specifically 4.2 million of them already knew that as they streamed 175 years worth of his music in 2016.  In our conversation before the show, he spoke about electronic music with some enthusiasm from Mr. Fingers (Chicago based DJ) to Disclosure.  The singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer told me guitar was his first instrument.  Both of his parents are guitar players as well and the two have supported their son’s artistic aspirations.  Moss explained that teaching himself keyboards was necessary for the kind of one-man band recording that resulted in his debut, Highspeeds, from two years ago as well as a forthcoming EP due this Spring.

While the music he’s produced to this early point in his career has been done at his home in the Westchester town of Mamoroneck, he knew from the get that he would need other musicians on stage with him if he were to recreate it and, as he is keen to do, use it as a foundation for a distinct concert experience.  He revealed his rhythm section, Devin Collins and Evan Marien, are Berklee guys and he appreciates setting them lose on his material.

Moss no doubt took some inspiration from the breathtaking views afforded by the roof deck atop The Standard Hotel in the East Village.  The free performance was part of a series curated by one Annie Ohayon better known as Annie O who has worked with a handful of heavy artists including an association with Lou Reed for many years.  She’s got an ear and over the six years she’s been booking artists into the space, her reputation and that of The Top Of The Standard has grown.
