Shovels-and-Rope-O-Be-Joyful

Al Green, Rodriguez & Shovels and Rope

Clearly, one of the greatest R&B singers – the greatest R&B singers that you can count on one hand but candidly, I was a little disappointed in the Al Green show at the Beacon Theatre on August 22nd. Of course they were sublime moments like How Do You Mend a Broken Heart. However, he does too much shtick. It’s too Las Vegasy. I don’t think he gives himself or his fans enough credit for hearing the 2012 Al Green put his art on display. Enough with the roses man. It also didn’t help that I just seen two epic Springsteen shows – see 8/22 Sound Advice – at Fenway (night two) and Gillette Stadium.

Shovels and Rope played a short set for invited guests at Electric Lady Studios showcasing tunes from their new album called O’ Be Joyful. The South Carolina male/female duo spoke to me and put on a riveting set that you can listen to HERE. I bumped into Gary Clark Jr there which was a cool bonus.

At the Highline Ballroom Rodriguez showed that he truly has tremendous talent to go along with his fascinating story. See Sound Advice 8/8 & 9/5 and see the movie Searching for Sugarman.
